11:01 pm - New tric zine!
Out of the basement and into your loving arms...

Greetings,

The new issue of Tric Magazine came out Friday, and distribution has begun. As always, if anyone is interested in taking some copies to help distribute, contact me immediately. Mail order will go out sometime this week as well.

You already missed the 2 release parties with the BR5 and lots of other screaming maniacal freaks, but if you were there, you know everybody else missed the berserk extravaganzas.

Some popular stud named Dave K. is helping me out now full time, so we're going to start banging out the next issue immediately, and it will come out early February. While this current issue is focused on layout and crazy artwork, the next issue is going to be all about reviews.

So send your stuff now...

Casey Grabowski
Tric Zine
219 East Court
Wilmington, DE 19810

If something of yours wasn't reviewed this issue, it'll most likely make the next issue. Dave is a major help in relieving my review woes, but we are STILL always looking for submissions of all kinds. Also, be on the lookout for new music releases and lots of shows! We've got lots of cd-rs and other gadgets if you're interested.

Cheers to persistence and dedication!
Casey

10:33 pm - Zine reviews in Tric #16
Adventures in Anneland, #6, Spring 2002, half size, 24 pages, photocopied. This is a funny little personal zine, with all types of short rants and raves, each with snappy titles. Take for example the “Dan-Date”, from this issue... It seems to be written by a bunch of friends, and they all talk about each other. There’s an article called “If Anne Were a D&D Character”, where her friend goes on to label her a Level 8 Half-Elf Neutral-Good Magic User. There’s some simple comics, plus music, TV show, and movie reviews. This is a funny, quirky zine! (814 N. Lansing St., Mt. Pleasant, MI 48858)

“Our Wounds” Thomas Michael McDade, half-size chapbook, $3 This is some of the better beat-style poetry I’ve read in a while. The layout is simple with a brown cover and illustration, a title page, table of contents, etc. The poetry is in the formal layout. Thomas’ work is featured in the beginning of this issue, and he found out about us through a review of Tric in Zine Guide #6. If you like this style, I recommend. Thomas currently lives in Monroe, CT with his wife, is a computer programmer, and has served with the Navy. (Pitchfork Press, 2002 A Guadalupe St. #461, Austin, TX 78705)

“The People” (Socialist Labor Party newsprint tabloid), Daniel DeLeon Society (misc. pamphlets), Mission Statement of the Anarchist Postal Militia. I have no idea how this happened, but I’m starting to get all this Socialist stuff in the mail. I’m not a Socialist, I’m just a guy with a zine. I realize Socialism sounds great on paper, but due to human nature, it just doesn’t work. I do appreciate, however, the way they pry at current events. With the impending war and the “support our troops” effort, we seem to forget that a major factor of the war in Iraq is over oil, not just “terror”. So I try to take what I can from it, and realize it’s still another form of media with its positive and negative points. The postal militia thing is a petition that’s going around for people trying to set up their own non-profit postal system that bypasses the US Postal Service. It’s an interesting concept, especially since they used the USPS to get it to my doorstep... This was sent to me from The Wooden Shoe on 5th Street in Philly. Are any other zinesters getting this stuff? (DDEC, PO Box 3744, Grand Rapids, MI 49501)

Speaking of government criticisms, I’m getting these strange letters from a man named Jacob David. They are conspiracy-theory political rants, claiming that Osama BIn Laden is a current member of the CIA, that it wasn’t really a plane that blew up the Pentagon in the 9/11 attacks, and that the anthrax attacks were an American military experiment. He asks for me to reprint these typed/photocopied letters, but I don’t think I will unless someone else asks me about them...
(Jacob David, 424 L. St. #23, PO Box 3050, Eureka, CA 95502)

“Stolen Sharpie Revolution- A DIY Zine Resource” 100 pages, quarter size, HiBright newsprint, $3. This thing is awesome. Totally worth the three bucks. Hundreds of tips you NEED to know about making a zine, running a distro, abusing Kinko’s, and even silk-screening, block printing, and putting out a record. The layout is sweet copy-and paste mixed with computer style, and is non-judgmental towards your own personal style. Includes tips on binding, page order, and general layout. That’s just the start. It gives advice on what to do when corresponding with prisoners, how to find zine communities, and how to re-use stamps. It’s even got a centerfold of envelope templates. Not only is it super informative, it’s fun! (microcosm, po box 14332, Portland, OR 97293, www.microcosmpublishing.com)

“The CIA Makes Science Fiction Unexciting”, HiBright newsprint, quarter size. The first issue in this series deals with the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. It is well-written, and gives a wealth of facts (and a little opinion) regarding the incidents revolving around MLK’s death. As stated in the intro, the writer’s “real hope is that it doesn’t read like a college term paper”. In actuality, it reads more like a history book. It is an extremely clean read, with very few typos. The logic in the organization is well-done, and does a good job piecing together the bizarre group of occurrences that have haunted this case for decades. I found it synchronic that I happened to be reading this during February (Black History Month) without realizing it until I saw a reminder on TV! (microcosm, po box 14332, Portland, OR 97293, www.microcosmpublishing.com)

Slambook #16, “7 Day Diaries Issue”, 44 pages, photocopied, full size. As stated in the title, this issue has a collection of bizarre daily diaries, some of which are real, some are made-up. Much of it, of course, is stretched truth to keep it amusing. They include the daily/weekly encounters of the Slambook Editor, a Goth chick, comics and stories from Ninny-bot, a stick figure Anarchist, and Miss Sullen Mouth, as well as someone’s weekly encounters at the Laundromat. It’s all fairly amusing if taken in stride. This issue also features a large article on Philly electronic label Zenapolae, and an interview with the industrial band Plastic Assault. There’s also a mini-interview with DJ Vortex, who recently returned to the area. Tons of comics, part 3 of a continuing erotic/violent story, electronic music reviews, and an astrology chart.

Slambook #17, “Gurlz Stuff” 48 pages, photocopied, full size. This one is all about girly things: body, sexuality, life, etc, except done Slambook style. It was good to see the Roll Call back, and the Goth Girl Trading cards were hysterical. The final part of the continuing erotic/violent story is here, as well as more entertaining comics and music reviews. There’s an interview with Germany’s Massiv in Mensch, and an article called “Web Gurllz Zine” with a guest editor. It’s a “Girls Gone Wild” type thing. It was hard to tell if Zaanan was making all this up, or if it was real. It’s always hard to tell, so I checked the websites, and most of them apparently don’t exist.
Zaanan is now putting out Slambook once a month, which is crazy considering the amount of effort he puts into each issue. The comics are detailed, and the layout is getting better and better. Slambook is not for the easily offended, and contains a large portion of adult/sexual/fetish content. I don’t really get much from the sexual stuff besides maybe a laugh, but the comics, humor, and music things are usually interesting to me. (4814 Cedar Ave., Apt. 1R, Philadelphia, PA 19143, z4man1@cs.com)

Ghettoblaster #2, photocopied, half-size. This is not the well-known music zine of the same name, but rather some personal/political thoughts from a guy living in San Antonio, Texas. I hate to say it, but I found it fairly cliche for this style of zine. The rants were mostly general complaints about greedy capitalists, urban sprawl, TV, and the like. I did enjoy the thoughtful comics/sketches and the interview with the homeless Vietnam vet. Curiously, I was more interested in the small things he’d mention while ranting on about politics or something. For instance, did you know that only in the past couple years San Antonio decided to put Fluoride in their water? How easy it is to forget how others in this country operate! Nitpicking, there were a bunch of grammatical errors, so I had to read some sentences over and over.
(Joe Huerta, 411 Drake, San Antonio, TX 78204)

“Hot and Bothered” #3 photocopied, half-size. I reviewed her last issue, so for a quick recap, Malena is in high-school and makes this scribbled zine during math class. It’s really funny in an innocent way, and she talks about how punk is too trendy and about being unpopular. She also has small articles on her glue gun, Joan Jett, bobblehead dolls, and silly zine and movie reviews. It’s refreshing! (524 Daisy Dr., Taneytown, MD 21787)

Black and Blue #2, photocopied, half-size- tall. From the writing, this seems to be Linda’s second zine ever, but it’s hard to tell. Lots of chick stuff, like pictures of her cat and a story about Ladyfest. There’s a “centerfold” of “softcore barbiedoll porn”, which was pretty funny because it reminded me of how I would tease my sisters when I was a kid. Other than that, there are some amusing personal cartoons and some female-oriented informative stuff. Lots of neat pictures and well thought out; nothing really out of the ordinary for this type of zine though. The zine reviews were good because they tied in personal opinions very well. (Linda Morris, PO Box 293, Visalia, CA 93279)

Dotti Horror #2, photocopied, full-size. The second issue of this music/punk zine from Delaware took about a year to come out since the first one. It features interviews with Scarling, the former lady of Jack Off Jill; Harlow, from VH1's "Band's On The Run"; and Girlish Figure, a female punk band from Richmond, Virginia. It also contains a few rants such as trying to go to college when you're family is broke, and how chicks are degraded when they show their tits at concerts. Miss Sarah Ellaneous took some pictures of The Catheters show at the East End, and wrote a rant about "the (lacking) DE scene". I didn't notice it in the last one, but this issue primarily focuses on women in music. I like the way Callye (the editor) does it without being direct about it, for the most part. There's also some poetry as well as show, zine, and punk music reviews. (1249 Kynlyn Dr., Wilmington, DE 19809, shydoll@erols.com)

Faltered Hope #2, photocopied, 1/4 size. I really like the way Dystatic makes zines. I’ve read several different issues/editions, but I can never tell if Dystatic is a guy or a gal. Everything is very elusive, which is probably why I like it so much. It’s in a weird way philosophic, even when some issues contain no words. Must be a Canadian thing... Anyway, one conclusion that I’ve made is that Dystatic owns a photocopier, and does some really neat things with it. It’s hard to describe, but it seems various small objects were laid out with strategically placed pieces of paper containing writing. Copies were made, then the new copies were cut and folded to make a complete poem. “desperately, I need catharsis” is the last line.
(dystatic@dork.com, 11840-55 Street, Edmonton, AB, Canada, T5W 3P8)

“Refused” Mark Price, photocopied. This is a picture zine full of disturbing caricatures. I used one of them on the page with the poetry in the front of this issue. We did a feature on him in the last issue if you recall, and he’s been submitting to us for almost a year now.. Mark, if you read this, please drop me a line. Your e-mail’s not working, and I’m not sure of your current postal address...

Here are some things to look forward to…

A big locals section on DE, PA, and NJ bands/artists/DJs of many levels and styles.

A huge music review section with improved and more in-depth reviews.

Local Artist Spotlight: Elvis Chicken. Back by popular demand, we delve into the guy who crosses the line from lunacy to idiocy.

killing time before I leave. Sundays are so lazy. I got much done though: laundry, e-mail stuff for the mag so I can chill at the beach, light dinner. I'm gonna bring my guitar down to the beach, and maybe I'll make some money giving Michelle's room-mate lessons. Hey, I knew listening to the Dead would pay off...

1:29 pm - pig dream last night
I had a dream last night that I was in a Mexican ghetto, and I was in a dirty outside restraunt, and they were roasting a boar, but it was still alive. It was squealing, and trying to get out, but it was tied tight. I was yelling for them to stop, but eveyone was laughing, saying it was OK. Somehow, the boar got free, and it was in a frenzy. We met eye to eye when it stopped about two feet in front of me, wet, slimy and charred. You could still feel the heat permiating off its body. It jumped forward and bit my hand, holding on and shaking vigorously. I was trying to use my other hand to free it, and others came and tried to help, and the pain was excruciating. It felt so real. I don't remember what appened next, but I had really odd dreams all night.
